Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to question certain decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
