"When are you chatting with Haim?" a text reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There's just a single issue: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' fourth member. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile supporters have publicly coveted the position.

It's clear a special quality is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy nominees.

Like all the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit unit. Their visuals repeatedly show them walking in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such boundless exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That is the ultimate compliment. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire others to form a group."

"Therefore all are welcome to be the fourth part of the family."

Historic Nod

The group have called into home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I follow the lists every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," continues Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The record came out of a period of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The lyrics track endings and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them determining in real time who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to consciously practice ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That recent toughness demanded a new sound – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The band's candor shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal horror stories.

Someone left Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an global audience.

However Haim will forever be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was four," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
